ARENAL VOLCANO NATIONAL PARK
This 1633 m high volcano with its almost perfect cone shape rises above the meadows and forests on the east side of the Laguna de Arenal. The regular rumbles, eruptions and fire-breathing have ended since the end of 2010. The volcano is dormant. The top is often hidden behind the clouds. The flanks of the volcano have been declared a national park. The volcano was active since 1968. The Arenal is 2 to 3 million years old. On July 29, 1968, a major eruption occurred, killing 87 people, destroying large tracts of farmland and forest, and burying 600 ha in molten lava. The vegetation has now returned. You can take a walk on the old lava fields in the national park.
