RINCON DE LA VIEJA NATIONAL PARK

Part of the park is closed due to regular eruptions. A walk to the crater is not allowed. However, the Las Pailas area with its bubbling mud pools and beautiful waterfalls can be visited.

This national park is an area with a lot of volcanic activity. The area covered with tropical jungle has more than 250 bird species. Sulfur and other hot springs bubble up in many places and crater lakes can be found. More than 30 rivers and streams originate in the park. This park is situated around the volcano Rincón de la Vieja (1895 m), an active volcano that last erupted in 1991. The park is accessible via a partly unpaved road that runs along Curubandé, signposted from the Interamerican highway, 5 km north of Liberia. Where you drive on private farmland you have to pay toll. The 19 km long ride can be completed in under an hour. The road is kept in good condition by the energy company that is carrying out a project here with thermal energy generation. From the entrance of the park, trails lead to waterfalls and mud springs, geysers, hot sulfur springs and other volcanic phenomena, the area called Pailas. The difficult hike up to the Von Seebach crater (8 km) leads through a remarkably varied landscape, home to more than 250 bird species, as well as ocelots, jaguars, monkeys and sloths. You can also enter the park at Santa Maria, 15 miles northwest of Liberia, via a bumpy road to Colonia Blanca. An all-terrain vehicle is required here in the rainy season, but in the dry season you can also use a normal car.
