Puerto Viejo de Sarapiqui is a real provincial town with a local market focused on the area. But it is mainly the base for boat trips to the north. On the rio Sarapiqui you can take a boat trip and see crocodiles, howler monkeys and poison frogs. From Puerto Viejo, boat trips go via the rio Sarapiqui through the jungle to the rio Negro along the border with Nicaragua. And on through the swamps of the Barra del Colorado to Tortuguero.
