On the Caribbean coast you will only find beaches with swimming possibilities south of Limon. To the north, the beach is a protected natural area. The sea turtles lay eggs on these beaches.
Cahuita
This Caribbean seaside resort is located on a bay, 34 km south of Limon. Costa Rica's largest "seaside town" on the Caribbean coast. It's just a village. Caribbean music and conviviality predominate in this village, which is mainly visited by young people. Life in Cahuita consists of Caribbean warm nights and long hot days when suddenly heavy showers fall. Reggae music can be heard everywhere, the Rasta style is part of life in Cahuita. .
The national park of Cahuita, with swamps and mangrove forests, toucans, hummingbirds and especially white beaches stretches from the center of the village in a southerly direction. nature trails lead through tropical vegetation and along the coast. The park extends into the sea in which there are extensive coral reefs. You can go snorkeling here.
Puerto Viejo de Talamanca
16 km south of Cahuita on the Caribbean coast is the quieter resort of Puerto Viejo. This place is also popular among young people, Caribbean music can be heard from the bars and restaurants. The atmosphere is relaxed, friendly and very tropical due to the lush vegetation. The place is located on a long beach where you can swim and snorkel safely. The road south to the Panamanian border is best explored with a rental bike. The road goes past the beautiful Playa Cocles, Playa Chiquita and Punta Uva to the village of Manzanillo. Here, tall coconut palms line white beaches and there are coral reefs in the clear waters off the coast. A wonderful place for snorkeling or swimming. You can also canoe between the mangroves in Manzanillo Park.
